Information on rack inspection according to DIN EN 15635

Racks and storage equipment are used in a wide variety of designs in almost all companies. Unfortunately, lack of stability and damage due to the use of forklifts or inadmissible loads often lead to an increased risk of accidents.

In order to be able to recognize and eliminate all sources of danger at an early stage, our specialists inspect and evaluate your racking systems professionally and independently of the manufacturer.

According to DIN EN 15635, the following rules must be observed.

Regular testing of the racks
Immediate notification to the safety officer when damage is observed
Inspection according to DIN EN 15635 by a competent person at least every 12 months
Determination of causes in case of repeated occurrence of damage
Keeping of a damage protocol
Report preparation with retention requirement

How do we proceed with the rack inspection?

Contents of the rack inspection

An important component is the visual inspection of your storage facilities. For this purpose, the load plates are compared with the structure of the racking system. A check is made for compliance with the regulations of the employers’ liability insurance association in accordance with DGUV Rule 108-007 and DIN EN 15635 as well as for compliance with manufacturer specifications for the construction and operation of the systems.

Implementation of the examination

In the case of damaged components, these are marked and the causes of the damage are determined. An important part of the on-site inspection is the establishment of a detailed inspection protocol with an assessment of the damage. This is followed by the establishment of a damage analysis as well as an action plan for the elimination of the identified defects. On this basis, an assessment of the safety of use is made.

FAQ
Rack inspection

1

Is there a legal obligation to perform a rack inspection?

Yes, the inspection is regulated in DGUV Rule 108-007 (BGR 234) and DIN EN 15635. These specify the scope as well as the procedure and inspections of storage facilities and racks.

2

Which racks are subject to testing?

Stationary shelving made of steel is considered to be shelving subject to inspection. These include, for example:

- Pallet racks

- Shelf racks

- Cantilever racks

- Drive-in racks

- Live storage and drive-through racks

3

At what intervals must the test be performed?

The obligation to inspect shelving and storage equipment must be followed up annually.
4

Is there an obligation for a rack inspection?

Shelving and storage equipment are used in a wide variety of designs in almost all companies. Unfortunately, lack of stability and damage due to the use of forklifts or inadmissible loads, often lead to an increased risk of accidents.

Storage facilities and racking systems are work equipment in the sense of the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV). According to § 14 BetrSichV, DIN EN 15635 and the rack inspection DGUV regulation 108-007, the employer is obliged to carry out a rack inspection at appropriate intervals (at least once a year) or to have it carried out. This requires a qualified person to inspect the racking.

The annual inspection requirement for racks and storage equipment is specified by law as follows:

- DGUV Rule 108-007 (BGR 234): Storage equipment and shelving are work equipment and are therefore subject to the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV).

- DIN EN 15635: specifies the scope as well as the procedure of inspections of storage equipment/shelving units.

5

Why do you need a rack inspection?

This racking inspection allows risks to be identified in good time and accidents to be prevented.

In the worst case, if the employer neglects his duty to carry out the rack inspection according to DIN EN 15635 and the rack inspection according to DGUV Regel, he can endanger the safety and lives of his employees. In addition, he risks the insurance coverage due to the missing inspection.
For this reason, the competent person for racking inspection must undergo special training.

Our experts in the field of racking inspection are qualified persons and continuously attend training courses. In this way, they are always up to date on the current legal situation.
